Surface Grinder Update. Quick update on the Brown and Sharpe #2 surface grinder. I've cleaned up most of the machine, stripped the paint (as feasible) and given it a new coat of paint. I wanted to do something different with the table so I included a bit of blue paint. Condition wise, I found a few things that need to be resolved.

Yes that $200 one I found is really tempting as long as it works, but then I have to find a place for it. I am going to go take a look at it next week and get some measurements to see if I can squeeze it in to the area. I do like to tinker and create though and that is why I was thinking of a DIY surface grinder.

I built mine based on pictures of Travis Wuertz's surface grinder. The magnetic chuck is 2.5"x12" and I used the Neodymium bar magnets from Amazon measuring 60mm long, 10mm wide & 3mm thick. I milled the slots about 5mm deep, so the magnets are below the table surface. And they are epoxied in.

Since grinding a 60 deg bevel on almost 3 feet of steel bar would take about a million hours even with a commercial surface grinder, I compromised and went with the most expedient solution. I used a hand grinder (a 9" monster grinder that shakes the hell out of you) to grind the bevel to as close to 60 deg as I could get it (checking a lot with a protractor).

A belt grinder type "surface grinder" can achieve better flattening results that you can by hand, but won't be anywhere near as precise as the above grinder, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some designs are particularly useful for knife making as they can be adjusted quickly and easily to grind in distal tapers, or tapering tangs, etc.

Looking forward to this Natlek. I think this is where the Surface Grinder Attachment was always heading .... a dedicated grinder, solid, precise - sized for knifemakers' needs. I'm in a part of the world where there are very few used, full size, Surface Grinders available. The ones that are, are expensive and worn-out.
